The Architecture of Accuracy: Signal and Noise in Construction Estimating

Throughout my career as an estimator, I have been driven by a serious focus on accessing higher quality signal in my own work. I know exactly how costly the noise of inaccurate data and unreliable projections can be. Now, I am applying that same relentless focus to building this estimating software, ensuring that other estimators can finally cut through the static and find the clarity I always sought.

We often speak of bias, the systematic error that leads us in a specific wrong direction. But noise is different. Noise is the unwanted variability in judgments that should be identical. In the roofing industry, noise is the “static” that emerges when different estimators look at the same set of blueprints and arrive at wildly different bids.

Professional judgment in estimating is frequently an illusion of validity. When an estimator relies on “tribal knowledge” or manual tape measures, they are inviting System 1 thinking—fast, intuitive, and prone to error—into a process that demands the rigorous, analytical scrutiny of System 2.

Identifying the Signal

To improve judgment, we must mute the static. We must move from the “reactive firefighting” of manual entry to a “proactive stance” of data-driven precision. This is what I call the search for the Signal.
